City of Newark, NJ – Owners of Vacant Properties Must Register with the City

Beginning August 1 2011, the City of Newark, NJ will require owners of inhabitable vacant residential properties to register with the City and to maintain and secure vacant properties.  Under the recently-passed Vacant Property Ordinance, failure to do so will lead to fines and Municipal Court action.

“Abandoned and neglected properties, if left unaddressed, can create public safety and health concerns for our residents. Externally, their presence falsely exhibits a lack of care and pride in Newark’s communities creating eyesores in our neighborhoods and imposing unfair burdens on neighborhood residents.” said Mayor Booker.  The Vacant Property Ordinance will strengthen the city’s ability to hold owners accountable for vacant and abandoned properties and will also empower the city to preserve the health and vitality of its communities.
